Water around a cylinder does not automatically mean the tank has failed. It may come from a pipe connection, a valve or a relief discharge. Keep clear of hot water and wet electrical equipment, never block a relief outlet, and call for an assessment to identify the source before deciding on a repair or replacement.

Keep people away from the wet area, hot discharge and electrical equipment. For fire, electric shock, a suspected gas leak or immediate danger, move to safety and call 111. If you smell gas, leave immediately; do not operate switches or use a phone in the affected area. Call from a safe location.
Never cap, plug, clamp, kink or otherwise obstruct a relief outlet, discharge pipe or open vent. Do not turn a relief lever, adjust a valve, drain the cylinder or attempt a temporary tank patch to diagnose an active leak. This guide is not a repair procedure.
The place where water collects is not necessarily where the leak starts. A technician needs to trace it; observations below are clues, not a remote diagnosis.
A puddle at the base may be water running down from a connection above, or it may indicate a problem with the storage vessel. Corrosion, staining or damp insulation need professional assessment. Do not remove the casing or insulation to investigate, and do not assume a new tank is required just from the puddle’s location.
Leaks can occur at the cold-water inlet, hot-water outlet or connected fittings. A worn seal or corroded fitting may be repairable without replacing the cylinder, if the tank and surrounding installation are sound. Do not tighten or dismantle a joint yourself; it may be hot, pressurised or close to electrical parts.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water for delivery to outlets. Water around it can be from a connected joint or washer rather than a failed valve body. The Waterloo example below was a connection repair, not a whole-valve replacement. Temperature settings and valve diagnosis are professional work.
Water may appear at the end of a dedicated drain outside, rather than on the cylinder itself. Some discharge during heating can be expected on particular systems; continuous or heavy discharge needs assessment. An open-vented low-pressure system is not the same arrangement as a mains-pressure cylinder.
If there is no visible leak and the main problem is cold taps, use our separate no-hot-water guide. A leak and a heating fault can coexist, but one does not establish the cause of the other.
It depends on the system and the pattern. Rheem’s NZ mains-pressure electric-cylinder guide explains that water expands during heating and a small quantity may discharge through the expansion or temperature-and-pressure relief valves. That model guidance does not mean every drip, wet floor or constant stream is normal.
A relief valve is a safety device. Its discharge route must remain open. Routine maintenance instructions vary by manufacturer and model; this active-leak guide deliberately does not walk you through operating a valve or accessing the heater.
A connection, seal or suitable valve repair may solve an external leak. A confirmed leak from the storage vessel can lead to a replacement recommendation, but we cannot determine that from a phone description or photograph alone. Cylinder age by itself is not proof of failure.
The assessment considers the actual leak source, tank condition, pressure and safety controls, system type, access, compatible parts and any relevant manufacturer warranty. Electrical or gas work requires the appropriate qualified trade. We explain the findings and proposed scope before you decide. On 24 August 2026, the technician recorded corrosion at an isolation-valve connection and a worn swivel-elbow washer. A swivel elbow and brass fitting were replaced, then water and power restored. The record does not supply a timed leak-test result.

Do not assume it is safe because the taps still run hot. Water near electricity, heavy discharge, steam or spreading damage needs urgent action. Follow the safe isolation guidance above and ask the attending professional whether the system can be used; do not restart an isolated heater yourself.
Not necessarily. A cylinder stores water, so a leak may continue after incoming water is isolated. Do not drain it or loosen a joint. If the flow continues, tell the technician and keep people away from the affected area.

A joint leak is not automatically a failed tempering valve. The named $495 + GST offer is for tempering-valve replacement, including parts and labour. Leaking pipework and cylinder connections are assessed and quoted separately; the diagnosis determines the proposed work.
