Repair or replacement · Lower Hutt
Repair or replace your hot-water cylinder?
Repair is worth considering when the fault is a replaceable component and the tank is otherwise serviceable. A confirmed leak from the storage vessel, significant deterioration, or unresolved recurring faults can make replacement the better option. Decide from the diagnosis, condition, available parts and full quote—not age alone, a puddle underneath or one cold shower.
Hot Water Now is the specialist hot-water service operated by Water & Gas Plumbing Ltd, serving Lower Hutt. We arrange the appropriate qualified trade and explain the proposed work before you decide.
Leaking now or no hot water? Start with our leak safety guidance or no-hot-water guide. Keep clear of wet electrical equipment and hot discharge. Never block a relief outlet or open electrical covers. For immediate danger, move to safety and call 111.
First establish what has actually failed
Ask the technician to distinguish the storage vessel from the fittings, valves, heating components and supply. An external leak can run down the casing and collect at the base. A loss of heat can have a supply or component cause without the tank itself being defective.
Connection or pipe leak
A washer, joint or fitting may be repairable while retaining the cylinder. The assessment still needs to check the surrounding condition and whether the connection can be repaired safely. Corrosion at a fitting is not, by itself, proof of a corroded storage vessel.
Decision: identify the source and get a separate leak-repair quote. Do not assume a valve-replacement package applies to connected pipework.
Element, thermostat or tempering fault
A diagnosed replaceable component fault can justify repair if the tank is serviceable, compatible parts are available and the system still meets the household's needs. Cold or lukewarm taps alone do not identify which part has failed.
Decision: ask what testing supports the repair and what it will—and will not—replace.
Confirmed storage-vessel leak
A leak from the vessel itself commonly means replacing the cylinder rather than replacing an external fitting. Have the source confirmed first, then check any manufacturer claim route and the installation scope. A new element will not resolve a failed tank.
Decision: seek a replacement recommendation based on the actual tank findings; do not try to patch, drain or dismantle it yourself.
Relief or expansion discharge
A running drain is not automatically a failed tank or faulty relief valve. Some systems discharge a small amount during heating; continuous flow can also involve pressure or control problems. Diagnosis comes before choosing a valve repair.
Decision: use the discharge guidance and keep the outlet unobstructed. Do not operate a valve to test a suspected fault.
Age is context—not a replacement deadline
There is no single age in this guide at which every cylinder must be replaced. Rheem's NZ mains-pressure electric owners guide identifies water quality, pressure, temperature and usage as factors affecting service life. It also gives model-specific professional maintenance guidance. That is not a universal lifespan or a promise about how many years remain.
Look at the installation date alongside the tank's assessed condition, service history, water conditions and parts availability. Follow the maintenance requirements for the actual model; anode arrangements and inspection requirements are not the same for every cylinder. Ask a qualified professional about maintenance rather than opening the heater yourself.
Repeated faults deserve a fresh explanation
Bring previous invoices and describe whether the same symptom has returned, a different component has failed, or hot-water demand has changed. Repeated discharge, for example, needs its underlying cause checked rather than another valve assumed faulty. A second visit alone does not prove the whole system is beyond repair.
- What was diagnosed and replaced previously, and was that work covered by a warranty?
- Does the current fault share an underlying pressure, supply or installation issue?
- Are compatible parts available, and is the proposed work a durable repair rather than a temporary measure?
- Is the tank otherwise serviceable, and will the repaired system meet current demand?
If substantial further work is identified or reliability remains uncertain, request both a repair scope and a replacement scope. Compare the costs still ahead—not a rule that a particular number of repairs automatically means replacement. No inspection can guarantee that an older, unreplaced component will never fail.
Check the warranty before approving paid work
A tank warranty is not necessarily whole-system parts and labour cover. Rheem's current NZ residential warranty schedule separates cylinder/tank replacement, tank labour and other parts cover; the periods differ by product and use. The installation date, manufacture date, exact model and applicable terms matter. Do not apply one brand's terms to another heater.
Ask the seller or manufacturer which failed item is covered, who must assess it, and whether labour, access, travel, external valves or pipework are included. The Rheem mains-pressure guide, for example, distinguishes integral components from installer-supplied pipework and fittings. A warranty claim needs confirmation; a long tank period does not mean every attendance or connection repair is free.
Keep the invoice, installation details and safely available model/serial information. Contact the seller promptly about a possible claim before commissioning non-urgent paid work elsewhere. You do not have to deal directly with the manufacturer instead of the seller. Urgent safety concerns still need immediate attention—do not leave a dangerous leak while waiting for paperwork.
For qualifying household purchases, Consumer Protection explains that Consumer Guarantees Act rights can continue after a manufacturer's warranty expires. Expiry alone does not settle your rights, and this guide does not decide an individual claim. Ask for the relevant warranty and consumer-rights explanation rather than assuming either automatic free replacement or no cover.
Compare the repair price with the whole replacement job
Start with the diagnosed repair, not a guessed replacement price. Our approved repair menu is:
- $190 + GST site fee where no parts are required.
- Element AND thermostat replacement: $495 + GST.
- Tempering valve replacement: $495 + GST.
- Relief-valve replacement for a faulty continuously running valve: $495 + GST.
All $495 options include parts and labour. The $190 fee is not added to those repairs. The no-parts site fee is not an unlimited-labour promise. The diagnosis determines whether a named repair is appropriate; continuous discharge does not always mean the relief valve is faulty.
Leaking hot-water cylinders and pipes are assessed and quoted separately. Other unpriced work also needs assessment and an agreed quote. See the same-day service and repair offers. A phone call is required to arrange and confirm same-day attendance; attendance is not a guarantee of completed repair or parts availability that day.
Questions to put beside the two quotes
- Repair: which fault and components are included, what remains in service, what further work is already known, and what happens if additional faults are found?
- Replacement: which model and capacity, valves and pipework, electrical or gas work, access, safe drainage, removal/disposal and any required approvals are included?
- Both: what is the GST-inclusive total, what assessment or call-out charges apply, what is excluded, and when can the required parts and trade work be arranged?
A repair can mean a smaller immediate commitment while keeping serviceable equipment. Replacement can address a failed tank or an unsuitable system, but its full scope needs agreement. Do not assume a fixed payback period, a guaranteed running-cost saving or that spending a particular percentage of the replacement price is always the right cutoff.
If replacement makes sense, choose around the home
Our electric-cylinder and heat-pump comparison holds the approved package prices and inclusions. The replacement calculator checks your selections; it is not a repair quote, fault diagnosis or online booking. Every replacement quote is subject to a site visit and confirmation of installation requirements. Uncertain or unsupported configurations go to assessment, not an assumed price.
- Like-for-like electric: the 180L package is for an existing 180L mains-pressure electric cylinder in the same location. It does not cover relocation, pressure conversion or another size.
- More storage: the 300L electric option requires assessment of capacity, recovery, space and the proposed inside/outside location. Not every cylinder is outdoor-rated; extra litres alone do not guarantee more showers or faster recovery.
- Heat-pump hot water: consider the upfront installation scope alongside airflow, clearances, noise, drainage, electrical supply and hot-water use. Read the heat-pump suitability guide and the specific Panasonic PHE-30ABR, Haier HP330M1U1 or Rinnai HydraHeat 340L guide rather than assuming any model fits an existing cupboard.
Tell us when showers overlap, whether baths are used, when hot water runs short and whether that pattern changed. Running out through heavier use is a different decision from a sudden fault with the same routine. Gas changes, pressure changes, relocation and unclear existing systems need their own confirmed scope; the online packages do not cover every installation.
Three real Lower Hutt repairs—not three replacement jobs
These Water & Gas Plumbing Ltd work records illustrate why diagnosis matters. They do not establish the likely repair, price or remaining cylinder life at another property, or imply those enquiries originated through Hot Water Now.
Wainuiomata: faulty element
On 14 September 2026, a technician replaced a faulty cylinder element and recorded a current-draw check. This was not a documented thermostat replacement, measured heat-up test or cylinder replacement.

Repair-or-replace questions
Should I replace an old cylinder that still works?
Age alone does not establish failure. Review its condition, service history, model-specific maintenance and whether it meets your needs. Planning a replacement can be sensible if deterioration or other substantial work is identified, but this guide does not impose a universal expiry age.
Can a leaking cylinder be repaired?
A leak at a connected fitting or pipe may be repairable without replacing the tank. A confirmed storage-vessel leak commonly leads to cylinder replacement. Have the source traced; water underneath does not identify it. Follow the leaking-cylinder guide for safe next steps.
Does a new element give me a new cylinder warranty?
No whole-cylinder warranty should be assumed from an element repair. Ask what cover applies to the actual work and part, and what original warranty remains. A replaced component does not renew every other component or reset the age of the tank.
What if the same fault comes back?
Contact the business that did the work with the repair date, symptoms and invoice. Ask whether it is the same fault, an unresolved underlying issue or a different component, and whether repair cover applies. Keep clear of any safety hazard; do not keep resetting a circuit or adjusting valves.
Is replacement always cheaper in the long run?
No universal saving can be promised. Compare the diagnosed repair and known further work with the full installed replacement scope, household requirements and any applicable warranty. Running costs depend on the equipment, energy tariffs, conditions and use; an upfront price difference alone is not a payback calculation.
Can I use the calculator for the cost of fixing a leak?
No. The calculator is for eligible replacement packages only. Leaking cylinders and pipes are separately assessed and quoted. Call 022 078 1825 to describe the leak and arrange the appropriate assessment.
What should I have ready for an assessment?
Your suburb, the symptoms and when they started, previous repair invoices, any warranty details and the installation date if known. A model or capacity label helps only if already safely visible. Do not remove covers, climb or reach past wet equipment to obtain it. Tell us about access constraints and who can approve work.
